Mayor's Message Regarding George Floyd
Posted on 06/03/2020
I’d like to make a couple comments regarding the disturbing video of the horrifying incident involving Mr. George Floyd and four members of the Minneapolis Police Department.

First of all, I’d like to offer my condolences. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Floyd family.

And I want to strongly denounce the criminal conduct of officer Derek Chauvin, as well as the rioting, the looting and the violence that has taken away from the peaceful protests and devastated our community.

This council’s stated vision is that Crystal be a welcoming and inclusive community. And it’s been a priority for some time; and that being said, we still need to do better.

I am proud our community’s outreach through our churches, through neighborhoods and our families. They are helping Minneapolis with the cleanup, and they are delivering food to Minneapolis, as well. I am really proud that Crystal is part of the response.

Following the killing of George Floyd, this council received numerous calls and quite a few emails regarding how our police officers respond to calls for service.

I’d like to assure you that the Crystal Police Department serves all of our residents in this community.

In an effort to promote the highest level of compassion, integrity and professionalism, our police department has a Multicultural Advisory Committee – known as the MAC – that seeks to improve communications and relationships within our entire community, including recent immigrants and communities of color. The MAC has hosted a lot of community events to provide education and increase communication. And many more events are planned in the future.

It is my belief that such community events will increase in both size and popularity and that our Crystal community and its culture of inclusiveness will grow with that, as we move forward. I also believe we will learn from this painful injustice.
