Citywide Organics Recycling
Posted on 01/08/2024
Starting March 31, the recycling program in the City of Crystal will expand to include the curbside collection of organics. Organics consist of food scraps and non-recyclable paper such as napkins and paper towels, and it will be collected weekly on the same day as residents’ trash.
Organics should be put in a compostable bag. Compostable bags can be found in many stores such as Menards and Target. Compostable bags have the BPI logo on the box and bag. Paper shopping bags are also acceptable.
All those who sign up by March 9 will receive an organics cart the week of March 24. Those who sign up after March 9 will receive a cart after the initial roll out is complete.
How to Sign Up
To participate in curbside organics recycling, residents must register online at hrg-recycling.com/organics. Those with organics recycling service through their garbage hauler also need to register with Hennepin Recycling Group (HRG) because garbage haulers will stop offering the service.
Starting with April bills, garbage haulers will stop billing for organics recycling. Instead, you’ll see a monthly organics recycling fee on the utility bill as part of the recycling fee. Residents may choose not to register for a cart but cannot opt out of the organics recycling charge.
More about Organics
About one-third of our trash is made up of organic materials, such as food scraps, food-soiled paper and certified compostable products. Composting these materials is a great way to reduce waste and create compost – a beneficial soil amendment in demand by landscapers and road construction crews.
